the extracts begins with the sound of birds
accompanied with the sound of the preparation of a type writer which then types
the words ATONEMENT. The fist shot used is of a closeup shot of a house which
you assume is a real house however the use of a tracking shot reveals the house
to be a doll house , which is later revealed to be a replication of the
house the character Birony lives in . The dolly shot of the toy animals is used
to suggest that the room belongs to a child however the movement of the camera
from low angle shot to a mid shot reveals a teenage girl who tries to take on
the role of an adult which is emphasised by the way that she interacts with the
help , Robbie , and her sister and her determination to find her mother.
The shot of her trying to find her mother is
accompanied with the use of non-diagetic sound , the typewriter , the piano and
diagetic sound the maid folding the sheets and the sounds of her hurried
footsteps which speeds up the opening of the film . However when she stops to
talk to Robbie the pace of the music slows down and is resumed when she
continues to search for her mother and abruptly ends when her mother describes
her play as "stupendous!" which suggests that Birony values the
opinion of her mother.
